The Journey To Success

Do you have a dream that you are awaiting to fulfill? Or are you  consistently struggling to achieve a goal? Do you feel like you are making no progress despite all your hard work like you are spinning in a circle?   If you answered yes to these three questions, then this blog is for you!

The Journey to Success is not easy, believe me!  I have struggled and jumped over so many hurdles to get where I am in life. My learning disability is my strength, not my weakness. There is a stigma that those with special needs are weak and limited to their ability. I want to let you know there are #nolimits to what we can achieve!

Join me on this journey to success! I want to share with you, my personal stories of inspiration and motivation that helped me to overcome the challenges I have faced. Your special needs may be different than mine but you do not have to overcome the challenges alone. We are on this journey together!

You Don't Have To Handle It On Your Own

"You will have to write a 15-20 page essay double space APA format discussing one of the following topics" These would be the words that would have my anxiety levels rising. Like an endless marathon, a million thoughts of joy, fear, doubt and worry begin racing through my head. The thought of having to complete a writing assignment for school stresses me out. Writing stresses me out period.

I always had difficulty in school expressing myself non-verbally. Written communication is my Achilles heel, and for years I struggle to overcome my weakness. I just felt all my hard work and effort will always result in the same low grade.

Asking for help is the smallest step with the biggest impact.

Asking for help is the smallest step with the biggest impact.

For a long time, I could never put my figure on why I had such a hard time organizing my thoughts to express my knowledge on paper. It was like I had all the facts and correct wording dancing in perfect harmony in my head but when I would try to transfer that beautiful and elegant recital on to paper suddenly it felt like the words were now dancing off rhythm. After spending hours hammering away at the computer to the very last minute I would just pray to God that I did well enough to pass.

Just has everyone has strengths, we all have areas we can build and improve on. One of the most important lessons I learned from this experience, I do not have to do it all alone it's okay to ask for help. Asking help, is the first step in advocacy.  It can be hard sometimes but when we do not speak up we can stand in our own way of success.  Here are some clues to let you know it’s time to ask for help.

  • You feel like you are going around in circles rather than moving forward and progress.
  • Same repeated mistakes
  • Unsure of where or how to start a task and just feel overwhelmed

No one was born with all the answers and knowledge to everything in their head.  It is our experience and interactions with others that help us to grow and learn. As you navigate the different transition stages in life don’t forget to have that support team on standby because you never know when you will need a helping hand.  Take a moment and brainstorm who around you can give you a helping hand.

When I finally accepted that I am unable to do everything on my own, I was able to ask for help from those that were strong where I was weak. Once I had helped the most amazing thing happened, I received an A+ on my Spanish literature assignment not once but twice! When I am feeling frustrated or overwhelmed (because hey I am human I still experience these emotions from time to time) I know who in my circle I can trust for the right words of encouragement to turn my mood around. Life is a journey all though we may have to walk alone at times it doesn’t mean we have to travel solo.
